Price cycles: fill up now or wait?
In most big cities, unleaded prices climb sharply, then drift down for weeks. Knowing where the cycle is can save you 20c a litre or more.
Unleaded average, last 6 months
Dots mark the days prices jumped (6c or more above the low of the 3 days before).

About the data
Where it comes from
Prices come from the government fuel price schemes, which require stations to report their prices. EV charger locations come from government open data.
- Western Australia: FuelWatch. Stations set one price for the whole day and publish tomorrow's price each afternoon, so WA shows tomorrow's price too.
- Queensland: Queensland Government fuel price reporting, published monthly (CC BY 4.0). Until live prices are added, Queensland stations show their last published price and its date.
- New South Wales and Tasmania: live station prices from the NSW Government FuelCheck service (API.NSW), checked every hour; and FuelCheck price history, published monthly by NSW Fair Trading (CC BY-SA 3.0 AU), for city averages and cycles. NSW figures here are shared under the same licence.
- EV chargers: Transport for NSW (CC BY 3.0 AU), ACT Government (CC BY 4.0) and the Victorian Government's funded chargers (CC BY 4.0).
Good to know
- Prices can change during the day. Always check the price at the pump.
- A price older than 2 days is shown in grey with its date, and never counts as today's cheapest.
- City averages use stations inside the city's rough postcode area (Perth: the metro map area).
- Price rise predictions give one date. A hit is that exact day; a day either side is shown as close, never as a hit. Published dates are never changed, and misses stay on the record.
- EV charging prices are set by each network, often per site. Where a network doesn't publish a price, we say so rather than guess.
